Episode 59: In AWE of Dr. Katie Martin–Creativity Series
Dr. Katie Martin is the author of Learner-Centered Innovation and VP of Professional Learning at Altitude Learning. She has worked in diverse contexts to learn, research, and support deeper learning for all students. She has served as a middle school English language arts teacher, instructional coach, and led the district’s new teacher mentoring program. Katie has a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in middle school education and her Ph.D. and in Curriculum and Instruction. At the university, district, and school-level Katie aspires to create experiences that empower all learners to develop knowledge, skills, and mindsets to thrive in a changing world. As a mom, she wants her kids to have learning experiences in school that build on their strengths and interests and as an educator; she is passionate about making sure we do the same for all kids.
In this episode, we learn how Dr. Katie works to influence others in shaping learning experiences that bring out the best in what she calls our jagged profiles. Each of us and our students are individuals with unique designs for learning. We discuss the importance of designing experiences in classrooms that are learner-centered to keep curiosity and passion flowing for our learners. Katie shares her own experiences in embracing herself as a creative as well as her connection to this passion through her own children. Katie had me thinking a lot about how we can work within our systems to promote creation and iteration, and I love her heart for creativity in our schools.
